Yesterday we have heard the news that former President Donald Trump's new social media venture Truth Social was downloaded 170,000 times since its launch on President Day 2022, according to research firm Apptopia. The app was available shortly before midnight ET and was the top free app available on Apple's App Store early Monday. For android users, the app will be coming soon as written on its official website.
Director Phil Napoli of the DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy at Duke University, sees the platform potentially having an impact on the next presidential election campaign as well as on division within the country. In his statement Phil Napoli said:
"Socially, politically, culturally, there's the potential for it to contribute and exacerbate some of the problems we're seeing in our country as it relates to political polarization and extremism,"
"But I think the real question is to what extent is this even a commercial enterprise? Is this about developing a sustainable business model or is this about part of the larger campaign strategy for the next election?"
New users already facing trouble signing up for the free app or were placed on a waitlist that cited "massive demand" soon after the launch. It was unclear if the issues were resolved by Tuesday. Users are getting messages like this "Due to massive demand, we have placed you on our waitlist. We love you, and you're not just a number to us. But your waitlist number is below," a message greeted users after they created an account.
Donald Trump's new media venture "Truth Social" will represent the voice of the Republican base who were continuously censored by Big Tech companies. Truth Social also planning to merge with Rumble, a Canadian video-sharing platform with a conservative bent, surged earlier this month after it attempted to poach the podcast host Joe Rogan away from Spotify with a $100 million offer.
How about that it's a platform that people can be a part of that doesn't get you randomly censored for saying something or giving your opinion that might be against Big Tech's self-made "guidelines" by employees who are, frankly in my opinion, idiots.
