'Degrees In Zombie Studies...': Ron DeSantis Discusses Job Prospects From Higher Education
At a press event last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) spoke about higher education.
As you know if you have good ideas that are really going to be value-added we want to be a part of those discussions and we want to be able to help where we can not just with infrastructure but you know we've done a lot of workforce education in Florida.
We have expanded CDLS commercial driver's license slots at our state colleges. Many state colleges around the state that's a high demand job you know, they'll pay you a fifteen thousand dollar (15000$) signing bonus. If you start as a truck driver now Walmart will pay you 110 grand as a starting salary, and so those opportunities are there in that and other types of skilled labor.
We want to make sure that people have the pathways to be able to do that you know you do not need to go to a four-year brick and IVY university to be successful. There's a whole host of ways to get skills and do very well. Particularly in the economy you know it is now where there are needs in high demand for some of these skills you know the good thing is you don't go into Debt.
When you do that it is really great and I look around and how many students have been told over the last generation to just mortgage their entire future just to get a sheet of paper some degree.
But you know what degrees in zombie studies ain't gonna have the cease part for you. Hence, you just need to realize that and make your own decision, and like you know one of the things, we're proud of particularly as you've seen the country in this inflationary spiral, the likes of which we haven't seen since the late 70s early 80s is.
Since I've been governor, no tuition increases at our state universities, you can go it's like six thousand sixty-four hundred like that's unheard of across the country. And so what we say is okay higher education one it needs to be focused on the mission, you know it shouldn't be about ideological indoctrination, it should be about doing core things. Well be rigorous but it also should be something that's affordable and doesn't require you to go 150,000 in debt I'm not a fan of doing that.
You know it's one thing to go into debt to be an engineer from like MIT, you're going to be able to be fine but you have so many of these other exorbitant price tags for some of these universities around our country. And what are you getting out of it? You know you're not really getting huge value so in Florida, we've done more for workforce education than any state over the last four years.
We're going to do even more but if you look at the number of apprenticeships available now. You look at what we're able to do with our state university colleges very well. In fact, we just did with the bright futures to be able to let them take that to state colleges without having to do the volunteer.
If you have a job you can do that and those hours will count so that's something very important for a lot of families. And so we're going to keep doing that we're going to continue to find ways to be able to expand pathways for people to be able to succeed. But I would say with this what we're doing today and what we've been able to do across this state you know we're doing a lot of exciting things and you know we've really only just begun a lot of the good work that we're going to do so thank you all we appreciate, DeSantis said this while addressing the press conference.
