Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota blasted the Supreme Court on the House floor Thursday. The Democrats talked about marrying her wife and raising their family together, as well as fighting for legal protections for same-sex marriages across the country.
She condemned the conservative wing of the court and legislators in opposition to the Respect for Marriage Act for being, quote, "out of step with the American people."
Representative Jim Jordan responded by calling Democrats out of step for supporting France's rights legislation on abortions. You can watch the video clip shown below this article:
Ms. Angie Craig said: Mr. Speaker, my wife Cheryl and I have married 14 years ago when one of the first states in our country allowed us to do so. It took years and a Supreme Court ruling to acknowledge and grant the legal protections that come with marriage across this great land.
In the ensuing years, we raised our four sons and expanded our family from six to nine, adding two daughters-in-law and a grandson to that mix.
I'm standing here today because, in the year 2022, families like mine are once again concerned that an activist out of the Step Supreme Court is going to take those rights away. And just so we're clear, the Supreme Court and the members of Congress opposing this legislation today are out of step with the American people.
Today, I urge all of my colleagues to vote "yes" on the Respect for Marriage Act. a bill that takes the long-overdue step of repealing Doma and ensures that same-sex and interracial marriages are recognized in every state, no matter who is sitting on the Supreme Court.
After her remarks, Rep. Jim Jordan said: I think, Mr. Speaker, I would just first say the previous speaker talked about being out of step with the Americans. Are you kidding me? The Democrats party thinks men can use women's restrooms; the Democrats party thinks boys can participate in girls' sports; the Democrats are the party that thinks you can take the life of an unborn child right up until their birthday, and the Democrats are the party that actually had a witness in committee say that she thought men could get pregnant, and we're the ones who are out of step with that.
