In a recent House Republican roundtable, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) sounded the alarm on the escalating border crisis, labeling it a "catastrophe" and asserting its position as the top priority for House Republicans. Johnson highlighted legislative efforts, such as the Secure the Border Act, passed nine months ago, which he believes could have averted the crisis if implemented.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Johnson expressed gratitude to Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik and fellow colleagues for their commitment to addressing the crisis. The speaker emphasized the urgency of the matter, considering it not only a national priority but also a pressing concern on the minds of the American people.
During the roundtable discussion, Johnson emphasized the significance of expert input, welcoming insights from panel participants who are well-versed in the complexities of the border situation. He underscored the importance of the issue by referencing a recent visit to the border on January 3rd, where a record-breaking Congressional Delegation of 64 House Republicans observed firsthand the dire conditions and challenges faced.
Describing the scenes as "infuriating and heartbreaking," Johnson highlighted the mistreatment of undocumented children by cartels and traffickers, underscoring the need for immediate action. He detailed the overwhelming numbers of illegal immigrants entering the country and the concerning practice of releasing 85% of them, contrasting it with the Obama Administration's policy of detaining 82%.
Drawing attention to President Biden's responsibility to address the crisis, Johnson argued that the administration's actions have exacerbated the situation intentionally. He called for the president to fulfill his statutory obligation, pointing out that the House Homeland Security Committee has completed the impeachment process for Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Johnson concluded by reiterating the House Republican majority's commitment to addressing the crisis and urging the president to utilize his authority to rectify the situation. The speaker highlighted the need to end the chaos created by the administration's policies and executive orders, emphasizing that the nation is facing a crisis that demands immediate attention and resolution.
