In a scathing critique, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris's selection of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the upcoming election. During a press conference, DeSantis didn't hold back, recounting the tumultuous events of the 2020 BLM riots in Minneapolis and criticizing both Harris and Walz for their roles in what he described as the "gutting" of the city.
"Let's not forget the BLM riots of 2020 in Minneapolis," DeSantis began. "Those were riots that Kamala Harris supported, even raising money to bail out the rioters with the Minnesota bail fund. And what did Governor Tim Walz do? He sat back and let the city burn. The city of Minneapolis has been gutted as a result of those riots, and we would never allow that to happen in the state of Florida."
DeSantis drew sharp contrasts between his governance in Florida and what he described as the failures of leadership in Minnesota and California. "This ticket represents the spirit of those 2020 BLM riots," he asserted. "You have a vapid San Francisco Democrat in Harris, and an Ilhan Omar-style leftist in Tim Walz, who shares the same policies as his fellow Minnesotan."
DeSantis argued that the policies championed by Harris and Walz have led to the decline of their respective cities. "We do not need an America that represents the failed policies of San Francisco or Minneapolis," he said. "We do not need to see poop on the street and cities burning down. That is not a prescription for America's recovery."
Highlighting the stark differences between his state and the regions governed by Harris and Walz, DeSantis pointed to the influx of residents to Florida. "During the 2020-2021 period, people fled those jurisdictions and came to Florida," he noted. "They told me about the mismanagement and how letting the inmates run the asylum destroyed their quality of life. You were five times more likely to move from Minnesota to Florida than vice versa, a result of people fleeing those failed policies."
DeSantis's rhetoric underscored a broader political narrative, one where Florida represents a refuge from liberal policies that he claims have failed in other states. "Why would we want that for the United States of America?" he asked rhetorically. "Where are people going to flee to? We can't have everybody live in the state of Florida."
The press conference ended with DeSantis opening the floor to questions, but the message was clear: he believes the Harris-Walz ticket symbolizes a dangerous path for America, one that mirrors the chaos and decline he associates with their respective policies.
In the high-stakes arena of national politics, DeSantis's fiery condemnation sets the stage for a contentious election season, where the battle lines are drawn not just between candidates, but between contrasting visions for the future of America.
