Karoline Leavitt: ‘Southwest Border Crossings In March Fell To The Lowest Level In American History’

Washington, D.C. – April 2, 2025

During Tuesday’s White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced a historic drop in illegal border crossings, crediting President Donald Trump’s leadership for restoring order at the U.S.-Mexico border.

"Southwest border crossings in March fell to the lowest level in American history—down 94% from March of last year under President Biden," Leavitt declared.

In March 2024, the Biden administration’s policies allowed over 137,000 illegal migrants to enter the U.S. In contrast, under Trump’s renewed border enforcement measures, illegal crossings have plummeted, marking a dramatic turnaround.

The ‘Trump Effect’ on Border Security

Leavitt attributed the sharp decline to Trump’s tougher immigration policies, including:
Ending "catch and release"
Resuming mass deportations
Deploying military assets at the border
Reinforcing asylum restrictions

She cited a Los Angeles Times report describing once-overwhelmed migrant shelters along the California-Mexico border now sitting nearly empty.

"Thanks to President Trump’s leadership, Border Patrol agents are finally doing the jobs they signed up for—securing the border instead of acting as travel agents for illegal aliens," she stated.

Deportations Surge Under Trump

The administration has also ramped up efforts to remove violent criminals, highlighting a weekend operation in which 17 gang members from MS-13 and Tren de Aragua were deported to El Salvador.

Leavitt also referenced a horrific case in Georgia, where an illegal alien released under Biden’s administration was indicted for the brutal murder of Chamelia Williams, a mother of five and grandmother.

"This suspect—ordered to be removed in July 2023—was allowed to stay under Biden’s policies. Now, he’s charged with malice murder, rape, aggravated sexual battery, and necrophilia."

She warned that Biden’s policies had allowed thousands of dangerous criminals into the country and criticized Democrats for opposing future deportations.

Trump's Pledge: "Protecting Americans First"

Leavitt reiterated that securing the border remains President Trump’s top priority.

"President Trump is focused on fulfilling his greatest obligation—keeping the American people safe and defending our country from violent invaders," she concluded.

With border crossings at record-low levels, the Trump administration remains committed to strengthening immigration enforcement and preventing future crises.
